Our era has been characterized by a resurgence of spoken-word arts included poetry-inflected music. Such forms, principally generated in urban settings, have substantially collapsed many of the boundaries that existed along racial, class and demographic fault lines. With the diminution of such historic divisions, new possibilities, such as the election of Barack Obama to the United States presidency, become possible.
