This drawing was featured in the Boston Globe’s coverage of the 2nd annual CELEBRATE! in l972. It shows Miss Lewis amid the eight awardees of that year—Eubie Blake, Thomas A. Dorsey, Katherine Dunham, Edward “Duke” Ellington, Roland Haynes, Lloyd Richards, Paul Robeson and Noble Sissle. The CELEBRATE! series—which continued through l979—always gave recognition to figures in the arts that, in addition to having mastered their craft, were humane, socially conscious individuals. |
