CHILDREN=HOPE

The Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists, in association with Violence Transformed, is pleased to announce Children=Hope, an exhibition featuring ten women artists active in greater Boston. Participating artists are Karen Eutemey, Gloretta Baynes, Susan Thompson, Johnetta Tinker, Gail Bos, Ekua Holmes, Fern Cunningham, Winifred Irish Hall, Lolita Parker, Jr. and L’Merchie Frazier.

The exhibition will be on display Tuesdays-Sundays, 1-5 p.m. through September 18th, 2011.

Children=Hope celebrates the potential represented by children and young families that remain the vital energy of human communities. At a moment when young people—especially young people of color—are too often seen as troubled and misdirected, the exhibition calls attention to their promise. It underscores that we cannot know in advance what extraordinary changes any child no matter his or her origins may make to human experience. Moreover, youngsters who grow up to simply become good parents and responsible citizens contribute enormously to the fabric of communities and the worthiness of life.

Children=Hope acknowledges the promise of young people by visualizing them through the prism of contemporary art.

Each of the artists invited to contribute to the show has a history of valuing youth as the hope of tomorrow. Some teach as an additional means of expressing this hope, others are arts educators, or persons who themselves embody the power of art to transform a difficult childhood into a brighter positive future.

Violence Transformed is a five-year old greater Boston initiative bringing together several arts, educational and health organizations that share the belief that the arts can promote social healing and wholeness after natural, domestic and social acts of violence and dislocation. Each participating institution brings its own perspective on this consideration though a show that embodies a belief in the transformative power of art. Children=Hope is our statement.
