In 1920, Simmons College launched its initial endowment campaign to meet the growing institution’s need for funds for faculty salaries, classroom space and maintenance. The Graduate Division was established in 1922 and the East Wing of the building was completed in 1926. Seven Afro-American students graduated from the College in the 1920s.
